Prof Jamie Rossjohn and his Sensory Science team are taking the Sensory Science Exhibitions (SSEs) across Australia and making science accessible and comprehensible to all members of the public.

This weekend in Perth, The Lions Eye Institute (LEI) Research Week will comprise series of free events, none more unique than ‘Sensory Science’, a one-of-a-kind tactile exhibition that is not to be missed. This exclusive exhibition is a collaboration between the Lions Eye Institute and Monash University’s Biomedicine Discovery Institute. It includes the science-based artwork of Dr Erica Tandori, and the LEI research team, and is a tactile exhibition that enables people with all levels of vision to learn about science and research in a new and engaging way.

Dr Erica Tandori is a legally-blind artist, academic and public speaker. She has a PhD in visual art and ophthalmology, in which she used art to articulate the processes of her own vision loss caused by juvenile macular degeneration. Since being diagnosed with the degenerative disease in her first year of art school, Erica has devoted her art-making and research to an examination of what it means to experience living with vision loss.

‘Sensory Science’ visitors will have access to a range of fascinating displays, including 3D models of viruses such as smallpox, a variety of molecules and antibodies, and eye research exhibits. The event is specifically geared to low vision/blind audiences, but open and accessible to everyone.

This event is free and all members of the public are welcome.
Sensory Science event is open to the public, at no cost. Visit the LEI website (www.lei.org.au)
